Inaugural Spring Regatta 2025

Sailors,

Four M15s from the club participated in the Inaugural CdA Regatta.  We kicked things off on Friday afternoon with some on-water coaching provided by Mark Barron.  We had light winds 5-8 out of the SW and got in several practice starts and short windward leeward legs concentrating on basic boat handling.

The winds were too light to sail on Saturday and racing was cancelled, but we all gathered at Vantage Brewing for some food, beverages and camaraderie.  Sunday was a different story!

We arrived at the beach for an early start and were greeted with 15G25.  The RC got a course set while we all tuned up for heavy wx sailing.  As the race started the winds lightened up a bit and all of us got around the first mark cleanly, and then the sustained wind picked back up to 15 with big gusts taking some of us by surprise.  During the second lap 2 of 4 boats capsized, but 3 of 4 finished the race with Mark and Bec Barron first across the line, followed by Spitfire, and Banshee.

The winds continued to build and racing was abandoned, but Mark Barron made sure we got the most out of the opportunity the weather provided by taking several of us out with him while a chase/rescue boat took video.  The trainee crewed for Mark and then swapped positions.  The experience in the heavy air with an expert coach was invaluable.  It's hard to wipe the grin off your face planing downwind at 14 knots!  We are ready for the Gorge!

Thanks to the CdA Sailing Club Board for putting this event together, and to Mark Barron for the coaching!  This is just the start of great sailing on CdA!
